Operation Clean Sweep
As a part of the annual Operation Clean Sweep effort held during the week of March 12th –March 17th, the Carl D. Perkins Job Corps Center helped clean the Jenny Wiley State Park. Mr. Carl Wilson and his Security class started working with the park on March 14th by cleaning along the shore of the lake. The class filled up two dump trucks before the end of the week. On Saturday, Mr. Wilson, Ms. Jimmie Slone (the center's Business Community Liaison), and 9 students collected twenty-four 42 gallon containers of trash. As part of the center's committment to the community and the environment, the Perkins Job Corps Center will be going back to the park for more clean up as it is needed.

Mariela Rivera, 24 year old hotel lodging student from San Juan, Puerto Rico, has been at the center for 150 days. Mariela began WBL at the Floyd County Conservation center on January 16th, 2012. Since then, her supervisor, Mr. Tony Grubb, has sent a letter requesting that Mariela work 6 weeks longer due to the outstanding work she has done for the center. Mariela has helped with educational programs in the Floyd County school system and she is the head start for classrooms at May Valley Elementary. On a recent visit on the first of March, Mariela taught the May Valley head start students shapes, colors, and numbers 1-10 in Spanish. Mariela was also involved in conservation activities within the community when she participated in seed giveaways on March 6th, 2012 at the Floyd Cl. Extension Office.
Mariela's valuable on-the-job experience along with her community involvement will only ensure her continued success after completing Job Corps. Mariela's example of success shows that "Job Corps Works."
